Thirteen Poetry Prompts For a Creepy or Sad Poem

The good thing about being a writer, is you don’t have to write about something that actually happened. Instead, you can harness an emotion or scene you’ve never felt before. Poetry prompts can be good if you’re out of ideas, or if you just want a challenge. So here are thirteen poetry prompts to help you write a creepy or sad poem.

  1. A poem about inheriting an old piano from a dead relative
  1. Use three or more of the following words: January, pencils, bricks, daisies, wood, and ending
  1. A field of dead flowers
  1. Learning something bad about somebody after they’ve passed
  1. Somebody’s last words circling in your mind
  1. Seeing an argument between two people as if you are a “fly on the wall”
  1. Put on your favorite sad song and pretend you’re stuck in it
  1. Write from the POV of a ghost living in an old house that a family is moving into
  1. Use the following words: corn, ebony, and alive
  1. Taking a walk on an empty, foggy street
  1. About the days passing quickly
  1. The hopelessness of being trapped on an island in the middle of nowhere
  1. Missing somebody (and them not missing you)
